Typically, I see people recommending T2 guns over their faction equivalents because of the 10% damage increase that the specialization skill can provide.

However, I've had difficulty convincing myself that this is true for tachyons. I've been lucky enough to acquire a nightmare recently, but most of the reasonable fits I've been able to put together used faction guns instead of T2 because of the capacitor savings that faction guns provide.

When you consider the rather extreme training requirements that T2 guns have, particularly for the last 2% bonus for rank V specialization, are the T2 tachyons really worth it? Is there something I'm missing?

I appreciate any insights you might have.

Depends.

When people reccommend T2 guns, it's also for the long range t2 ammo (aurora for tachs), which gives decent damage at huge range for the type of turret. Since this isn't as important for mission running where tachyons already give fairly nice range, faction is viable alternative. If we were talking about megapulse though, T2 is almost essential, even for mission running, for the ability to use Scorch.

The real question is whether the advantages of faction guns (reduced cap usage, lower skill reqs, higher base damage) outweigh the disadvantages (less damage if spec skill >3, no t2 ammo, price tag) for that situation.

- T2 tachys are cheaper
- T2 tachys have more dps /and alpha/
- they can use t2 ammo
- they eat more cap
- and have higher fitting reqs

- so : you want more damage and you dont want to waste money on your mission ship, fitting is irrelevant on nm, cap usage is mostly irrelevant if you want to use cap booster, aurora crystals "can" be good is some specific conditions, but most likely you wont ever use them
= if you have better skills to train /you dont fly in sniper bs gangs etc/, you can ignore t2 tachys, your efficiency will be only slightly lower, if you already can use them and you want to use capboosted nm, fit t2 instead of faction, if you decide not to use cap booster /or even permarun nm Shocked/, using faction guns makes sense

- i used faction tachys till i got t2, the difference is pretty small, but since i use cap boosted nm, their cap usage doesnt bother me and every bit of dps counts

For a mission Nightmare, I would say faction Tachs are definitely better. The difference in cap use is huge. The difference in damage, even if you are going to spend 2M skillpoints on large beam spec V (are you?), is pretty trivial. Being able to drop a cap mod for a tracking computer will more than make up the difference.

And considering you only have to buy 4 to fit on your 750M ISK ship, they're not really that expensive. Buy IN tachs, and the IN Heatsinks to go with them.

they use a bit less cpu, the pg is the same on faction/t2

and I'm a dps *****, anything for more dps! plus I like my fittings to be cheap as possible, and well gotta at least throw faction damage on (dps remember!)

the lower cap use sounds nice though, but I haven't really cared to switch t2 works well enough for me!

Using a 5% turret damage hardwiring instead of a 3% will give you a greater damage increment than using T2 over Faction Tachs. I use both +5% damage implants, and a 5% tracking as well. They make a hell of a difference.

This is just a fitting for missions, so sniping isn't a concern. I'm not interested in using the T2 weapon crystals (compared to scorch, they suck! wtf?), and I'm doing a permarun nightmare because of an unstable network connection.

All these factors together, I think I'm quite content using my faction tachyons. Thanks for all the help guys.
