Click me!

Just watched this video from GDC posted on the DUST-514 Facebook page. The most interesting piece of information on there relates to Eve Gate - Apparently we are going to be able to use Eve voice out of game now!

The video basically suggest that we will be able to just fire up our broswer and communicate with other players via Eve Voice on Eve gate without the need for even launching the client.

Just wondering whether this will see a massive increase in the amount of players using Eve Voice rather than 3rd party comms software?

Also a couple of questions to CCP - If we are using Eve voice out of game how will we control who can join channels and who can't? What tools will we be given in Eve gate to modify permissions and decide who is allowed to speak and who isn't?

Not really.. the voice itself lags yes, but it doesnt influence eve lag as it runs over a seperate vivox server

i think he means the client, not the server, and it actually does :<

Yes! We can now have problems connecting, "Cannot find voice server" and "You have been logged out of audio" errors without even having to start the EVE client. There is a reason why a lot of people use 3rd party voice comms: Better quality, usually less issues, more setup options, and some redundancy (if EVE crashes or DCs, you can still be on fleet comms, and still know what's happening).

That said, it's a good idea (hampered by the buggy voice chat), but it also implies that you'll be able to access corp/alliance/militia text chat from out of the EVE client, which is fine by me.

With how many people? Because I have never had this issue.

If the ingame voice goes pear-shaped (and it does a lot), you have to log out of Eve to reconnect, with an extenal voice like vent, you don't. No competition.

What voice chat systems don't cause network congestion when you have dozens of people connected?

Dozens? I've been on the same voice comms with 400 people, didn't cause much problems.

EDIT: The reason why no one uses EVE Voice is because quite a few people either can't connect or have lousy quality, also if your EVE crashes you lose connection to EVE Voice, leaving you without a clue what is going on.

Therefore, TS3 > Ventrilo > TS2 > smoke signals > two cans with a string > EVE Voice.

It's been known since fanfest that this was in the works.

How to control channels will be done via the New Eden(Space book/social networking) setup. Meaning API. You want access to your corps/alliance's eve voice server, your Login/pw will most likely be your API key. Hopefully they'll allow us to use a "nickname" as a lot of us use a single name across multiple accounts with difference first names/last names.

As for permissions, they'll most likely be just like most voice chat programs. Most have switched to whispers, command channels, ghosts, and so on, just like TS3/Vent. If I remember correctly, Vivox does similar features for most of their clients in other mmo's/out of game clients. Just CCP/Vivox will be integrating a little more tightly then before.

I'm just wondering how far EVE is going to go.

Is New Eden going to be just a social networking site, or is it going to be a full social application, with voice chat, web site, messageing, instant messageing, friends lists, online/offline notices and so on, sort of like a facebook meets ICQ/MSN/IRC/E-mail and so on. Probobly be a few months till we see any hard details.

Bah, after 3 hrs trying, we can't get the smoke signals visible by everyone in corp, let alone alliance. That and running to the window every time I need to signal is slower than typing.
