you can do mission without maps, but using maps, like http://evemaps.dotlan.net/ is always good.

As you progress up the mission ladder, you'll be using a variety of agents and NPC corporations. As the next higher quality agent becomes available, odds are that he/she is in a system/region some distance away.

At that time you make a decison on whether or not to take your mission road show to the distant system, or continue to grind with the lower level agent until a closer agent becomes available.

I have found Ombey's maps to be an invaluable tool in getting the feel of various regions and planning my next move.

They are particularly useful in getting away from congested areas and concentrations of Ninja parasite salvagers.

I suggest downloading the maps, then printing the ones relevant to your current situation for quick and easy reference. The information on number of asteroid belts, ice fields, and stations/services available is particularly useful.
