Salvage beams and Turret-Mining Lasers both appear to be using a graphical effect that my nVidia card doesn't like.

When I say Turret-Mining lasers, then I'm talking about the regular Miner I and Miner II thingies that you can put on any ship - The Strip miners do not cause the effect.

I know I'm far from the only one having this issue and I also know that turning effects off as a whole tends to fix the problem. But I'd like to have my effects back without having to be afraid the game suddenly freezes to death just because someone uses a mining laser or a salvager.

Did anyone find a solution to this? It appears to only affect nVidia cards on Linux.

Thank god, there is only one nVidia card. So everyone should have found and experienced those difficulties.

Now, I have a nVidia GF 8800 ultra card with the 195.30 beta driver.

But never experienced any of those glitches or decreased framerate while using these modules. Even dusted off some old miner I/II to test.

Yeah its funny mining arkonor with a miner I.

Maybe you could add your distribution, your card model and the driver version?

No additional stutters here with running a salvager.

Geforce 8800GT, Driver 185.18.36, Athlon64 X2, Xubuntu 9.10.

Your sarcasm is entirely unwarranted and makes you look like a douche, I am of course referring to http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18146 wherein all examples of the bug occurring are nvidia users, and various examples of people not having the bug are on ATI cards, including one case where a guy has two laptops, one with an ati and one with nvidia and the problem only occurs with the nvidia laptop.

The reason I posted is that I wondered if people *here* have found some solution and failed to post it at wine's bugzilla.

I'm going to add an additional observation though, all the nvidia card users that report the error are using a 6xxx or 7xxx series.

I thought the funny was about right. You are the first to even mention this behavior in the Linux forum. And you even state it is a Linux only issue ... but now that you've named your GPU, that might explain why it's not a common complaint - there won't be many Geforce 6/7's still being used now I suspect.

I had the same problem using a 7600 GS. Only solution was to zoom out the scene very far. When I upgraded my graphix card the problem was gone. :-)

Nvidia 9800 GT
Athlon 64 X2 3800
Linux 2.6.27.42-0.1-pae
wine 1.1.17 (patched)
OpenSuSE 11.1

Crap. So now you're telling me I have to get a new mainboard, new cpu, new ram, because they don't even make AGP cards anymore? Crap. Crap.

The current Nvidia 195.36 beta driver has a regression fix:

"Fixed a regression that made the "TVStandard" X configuration option cause system hangs with products from the GeForce 6 and 7 series."

Maybe you should give it a try.
