Armistice/Veteran's/Remembrance Day is not a celebration. It's a commemoration of our nations' fallen soldiers over the years and in the UK, particularly WWI. Wishing someone a Happy Veteran's Day is as weird as wishing someone a happy hallooween Confused Happy birthday, happy new year, happy anniversary go right ahead.

o7... To those who have endured the hardship of war, who have lost friends, and have perhaps at times come closer to death than most of us. Thank you for your service. You weren't always able to choose your cause, or your battle, but you did your duty, and I'm grateful for your example.

Duty? It should not be anyones duty to die needlessly.

I see today as day to remember those who fell victim to the horrors of wars they did not start or even want, I long for the day when people celebrate the first year of world peace, instead of what seems to be an endless rememberance of war dead. For every new conflict proves that war does not solve anything.

If all the people in the world refused to join the military from this day forward then who would fight the wars? As long as people continue to be conditioned by their governments and see other humans based on their flag alignment then the world will never be at peace and we will continue to lay flowers for the dead.

We can not depend upon the worlds leaders to prevent wars or create peace, only the people united can achieve this.

Honouring people for fighting for a cause they maybe don't believe in, against people they may have no gripe with, and have no reason to want to kill. I'm not sure what that is honouring in that situation? War itself? the warmongering national identity? blind stupidity?

As a vet I can answer this...

1. The cause of the fight is an order from the president they have sworn an oath to obey (it's called national pride, something you obviously have never heard of)

2. The people they are fighting are the enemies of the nation and are trying to kill them... if that's not reason enough for having a gripe I don't know what is.

Something tells me you've never stood post so I know you couldn't understand any of it

Ah god, the irony in your name.

"Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America nor, for that matter, in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship. ... [V]oice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country."
Hermann Goering

Whatever, dude. Our society is flawed, but our leaders are beginning to understand that we aren't the rosiest-smelling piece of **** on this planet. People hate us because of our leaders, stereotype us (but who doesn't do that to others at some point? Laughing), use us as scapegoats for any and all perceived world problems and yet we still pick up a lot of the slack for the UN and other international law and aid agencies.

Anyways, on topic post, my first in a few weeks:

To all the veterans that have served-Thank you. Freedom is NOT free.

Whether you disagree or agree with the current deployments, current warzones or current politics, is moot.

You have the ABILITY to disagree or agree as a result of what your grandparents, parents or someone in your family did either 90 years ago (WW1) or 60 years ago (WW2).

You have the ability to be a prat NOW because very likely if someone you never knew didn't sacrifice their life for your personal freedoms today.

THAT is what Veterans/Armistice/Remembrance day is about.

Lest we Forget

This.

I find it ironic that not 100 years ago millions suffered and died so that those who lived on could be free. And today we find that half of those who are free use this freedom to **** on those that died for them.

Go figure.

Remember that people died for you to act like a **** before making negative comments about Rememberance/Veteran's Day. Regardless of whether or not you think what is going on in the world today, or happened in the past, is right; you should always find time and have respect for those who died for your country.

To all those currently in the warzones around the world, and to those that have paid the ultimate price for their country and those that they love

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

I am a veteran and I never find anything happy about it.

This day started out as Armistice Day intended to commemorate the cease fire of the War to End All Wars.

But by the time the war after that came, it became yet another day for our warmongering centralized power structure to glorify war.

I celebrate this day by reading Smedley Butler's "War is a Racket". I recommend it.

Applebee's was very nice to me today and gave me a free steak and desert, my work place celebrated by making me work though while my other shift got off, oh well.

o7 to all those honorable then, now, and to be.
