Edited by: Tamahra on 27/12/2009 20:47:15Im still following the info that is being released about dust 514, i thought some of you might find it interesting: The AI can take over the role of a commander in a Dust battle if no player is willing to play the commander or no player has earned the right to the role (the AI will fly the MCC in that case) Commanders choose vehicle and installation loadouts prior to a match, placing preliminary spawn points and structures on a wireframe map in full view of both teams as they set the stage for conflict There are ten vehicle classes, but the commander can only commit five for each battle. We have 15 installation types, and he can only choose five. It’s simple, really, like Magic: The Gathering: you prepare your deck and then fight as commander you can affect the battlefield by creating incentives for your players to perform certain tasks: you’re working towards objectives and moving the focus of the fighting about Essentially, the Eve players need to control planets. Planets give them resources and affect sovereignty. So they can issue contracts to win over territory on their behalf: either open-ended contracts for all to accept, or more direct contracts to specific mercenary corporations. We have aspirations to add on to Dust twice a year – we have plans for expansions like we have with Eve, and we’ve already drafted out a wishlist of things Player progression, then, depends upon a system CCP refers to as the achievement matrix. Levelling is bad, but the achievement matrix does to a certain extent replace it,” suggests Sveinsson. “We don’t want to have a linear kind of levelling: we want to promote usage of all kinds of weapons, playing for all races and accepting all kinds of contracts, so we need a very freeform approach. At the start, the matrix is basically ten tiers with multiple columns for the different NPC corporations that manufacture weapons and equipment. To advance a tier you need to accrue a certain percentage of the achievements within that tier. This unlocks the ability to buy better stuff, but you can also collect combo unlocks through skilful playing that gives you persistent attribute enhancements for vehicles and weapons. When it comes to the battlefields themselves, the landscape of Dust is just as persistent, with dynamic arenas that change over time. “The planets where you’re fighting already exist in the Eve universe,” stresses Sveinsson. “That means they react to that universe. The first time you go there, the battlefield looks green and friendly perhaps, but then someone nukes it from orbit, and the next time you go there it’s totally different. You think to yourself: ‘Oh, I know this place, but it doesn’t look as I remember it’, and that’s because there’s a player in a different game who is affecting it. Variety’s not just about the minute-to-minute gameplay, where commanders can deploy different installations: it’s also about the composition of these battlefields. Not all planets are created equal: some are lush, some are arid, some are deserts. We can only create so many battlefields in terms of the models, but if you have a terraforming index, you can actually state where in its evolution a planet is: this alters which textures are being used, which affects gameplay in terms of atmosphere, sight-lines, water levels. In a more developed planet, maybe a route you used to take is now filled with water. That changes your tactics. Linkage |

Still going with my "console addition to the EVE universe" theory. Aka, console controlled EVE in the same persistent universe |

Me imagines a FPS game where your trying to run from an all powerful capsuleer that has his sights on killing you all because you stole something from him. Saddly no matter how many times you kill him he keeps comming back, little bit more angier than last time. Of course with him being a capsuler what you as a normal man can do against this demigod who can hire legions of loyal soldiers and surmountable amounts of equipment at his disposal let alone those mighty battleships that can do you in from orbit.
Im sure if you threw a good enough story writer and level designer at it, it could be a compelling game.

You guys thought CCP would write a whole new 3D engine for this tiny MMO with only 250k players?
ROI much? |

It's not like we have a lot of info to go on (nor will we receive much info even after this "unveiling"), it's not like the codename says anything to me right now, and it's not like it's far into the future so the suspense would be killing me. It's as if you would ask us to be anxious about the trailer you hear will be shown tomorrow in some cinema before a movie you don't really want to see, a trailer for some upcoming movie of some director you liked previous movies of. Seriously... what the... how the hell should anybody be anxious about that ? I have a better thing to be anxious about, like, umm, say, will it rain tomorrow or not, or will my friends grill white meat or red meat at the next party ? Now, those are things that (in relation to this "dust xyz" thing) are almost worth being anxious about. |

dust 514 sounds like some exotic designer drug to me.
maybe its a new feature that is more addictive than crack and hello kitty online put together. it will be so extra special uber uber leet that when announced it will make the heavens part and choirs of angels sing and eve players wet their diapers with awestruckness. WOW will tremble at the weight of the announcement and start announcing added features to combat eve rather than that mmo coming out a yearish from now. Every other space mmo in the pipe throws up their hands and howls and curses that they lost and shuts down their offices and go home en mass.
Or maybe it just some buzz word they made up to make it seem like they were actually announce something we have not heard about already 2 years ago in some dev blog, or seen videos of already and will make some lame joke about it in the speech. |

well the logo kinda looks like the eve fac war one, doesn't it? so might have something to do with eve? and I get excited about anything to do with eve :) but there's other stuff I wanted to see from the GDC (as I cant pay a 600 euro ticket to attend...) but it would seem there is no stream. or at least there wast one in the morning... |

Edited by: Jowen Datloran on 17/08/2009 11:56:08 Well, the Dust 514 logo pretty much spells out EVE so either it too is directly related to the EVE universe (which is my bet) or the artists at CCP have gotten so used to making EVE logos that they no longer can make anything else. |

L2Dev They're creating another engine for WoD, not to mention they already have a 3D engine - once you have one it's really not all that difficult to apply it to different things (IE, characters, etc). EVE has 300k+ players too, FYI. And this 'tiny' MMO is the second largest next to WoW. |

Well my theory is that it will be a console FPS game that will hook in to the EVE universe as part of planetary interaction.
In less than 24h we will know. |

BS.... Here's the truth, it will be the single player version of EVE on a console. This will make it so that all the multi-boxers who don't like the "Multi-Player" part of this MMO can not waste bandwidth running their 86,735 alts. |

It's nothing to do with Eve directly.
Conscious that we don't have enough natural resources to sustain the human population at current growth, the World leaders have asked CCP to design a spaceship capable of mining, running missions, shooting things with lasers, and able to spin freely when docked in the international space station. Obama himself will be there for the announcement. |

That's only in the West. In Asia it's not even on the radar. Not that I'm belittling Eve's success, just that I thought I'd put some perspective on it. Asian MMOs are f'ing HUGE compared to Eve, and right up there with WoW. We should just be thankful CCP likes to keep its vision of the game instead of going for what's popular with the masses. |

I doubt there will be a stream. there is nothing on their site, and only a few things on youtube. Gamasutra is however doing a report on all the speeches going on there. So you can check summaries of the events that might be of interest to you. and they appear to be updating regularly as well. I wonder how long it will take them to update whatever it is CCP has to say... I didn't find anyone else doing any reporting on the GDC so if anyone has any links please share :) |
