This story starts in the early months of 2006 when my brother needed a place to stay. I wasn't much of a gamer back then and for the most part if I needed a fix I played Command and Conquer.

Bro sets up shop on the other side of my desk and boasts about his new uberer computer and all the things it can do compared to my old clunker that I bought on sale at the local office supply shop for about 200 bucks.

Soon he can talk about nothing but this new online game called Eve and just how cool it is with all the graphics and stuff you can do, all for only 15 bucks per month. I look over at his monitor and see him sporting around in his newb ship mining veldspar, it kinda looked VERY boring, but it also looked like a bit more of a challenge than C&C so I downloaded the client (2 hours back then even on what was at the time, a fast connection). Next thing you know I am mining Veldspar in Duripant, running rookie plex's ad getting blasted to bits for looting things I should have left alone, but I was having fun, but constantly broke.

After about 3 weeks of this I had finally earned enough isk to get my first Thorax, and keep in mind that back then, you got less than 30k skill points when you where born and there was no 100% bonus to training, so this game was a grind.

Then one day, bro tells me that he found this new mineral that he was able to sell and make over 300 million isk in just under an hour. He was unable to recall the name of the stuff and was never able to find it again. He was kind though and gave me 50 million isk and I was in freaking heaven...oh the thing that I could buy, like a pile of skills and even a new thorax.

Soon after this he managed to find another belt of this elusive empire ore and boasted that he had just made a billion isk, except this time his Visa card was still on the table and he had this sly look on his face. I know the look and said WTF Bro, what am I missing, I can't find anything better than Scordite and we are in the same freaking system. He smiles, and says that on a web site that he found you could actually buy the isk and they would ship it to your character. He is so proud of himself and I am so not happy because my little bro is in a Battleship and I am still in my thorax. I consoled myself with the fact that I still have hair and he is bald as an egg....but he still has a battleship and I don't.

So I go to this web site and sure enough, there is the isk for sale in increments of 100 million, 200, 300, 500 and 1 billion isk. Then I look at the price and the stuff is selling for 260 US dollars per billion. There was now way I was going to pay that price for game credits and slumped back into my chair and activated my Mining Laser 1 on the next roid.....

He saw me looking sad and sent me 100 mil. Thanks Bro.

Fast forward 12 months and Bro has this worried look on his face. It seems that he has logged on to find that his wallet is...um...in the negative. At first I think that he is bs'ing me but then when he opens a trade window it says that "his characters name" would require 26 billion isk to complete the trade. I look at him and say "are you really in the hole 26 f***ing billion?" How much ISK have you bought you f***ing idiot. His reply was "I didn't think it was that much", but all of a sudden it became crystal clear that he had dumped thousands of dollars into buying game money.

For the next 3 days I followed him around empire as he packed all his gear into haulers, warped to planet 1 and ejected so I could get into the hauler and move the stuff to a trade hub where I could sell it and slowly put the money back into his characters wallet. At that point in my eve life I had never seen so much faction stuff and was shocked at how much it sold for. He had so much of it he didn't even know how much he had, no inventory control, no way of how much stuff he was giving me....muhahahaha, this was how I got my first fortune.

End of part 1

Part 2.

So in total we manage to sell of about 20 billion worth of gear, which was alot of work back then because not too many players had heaps of isk to throw around. Finding buyers for the cap ships (no moms, titans back then) was a tad hard to because there wasn't alot of player that could fly them, the game population was still under 13k active players on a Sunday during prime time.

He ended up selling a character he bought on the same web site for isk and finally cleared up his wallet, then sold that character as well. I figure he spend about 4000 us dollars during his first 18 months in eve...not including game time.

Fast forward to last fall and bro needs a place to stay again and guess where he ends up. This time he is bragging about this new character he just bought off the forums and blah blah and this new faction fitted (and I mean the bestest stuffs)Mom that he just bought. I look at him and ask how much all this new shiny stuff was worth and he simply says isk has gotten alot cheaper. DOH.

Enter the Guiding Hand Scotial Club.

So idiot stick brother leaves said mom sitting in a pos in a .3 system. Soon he is convo'd by a player that wants to join his corp. I say bro, don't let anyone in that you don't know. He says don't worry, I know what I am doing and this guy is really ****ed at his old corp and looks like a good pvp'er......umz, ok.

So the next day, when I decided that I can capitalize on the clone vat bay on the mom and get clones for my players with no standing I ask him to log his new uber player on and I will meet him at his pos. He says that he will have to fly there as he just left the mom sitting in the bubble. I looked at him and said don't tells me you just left it there. he says, why, where would it go.

The next thing he says to me is "Did you move the Mom"

A petition to CCP follows and the response says "the item in question is in the hands of another player"

He just sits there with a blank look on his face...he checks his eve mail and there is a thank you letter from the new corp member who tells him how he bumped the mom out of the bubble.....and how impressed he is with the fittings.

The next day 4 of bro's acct's get a global ban, it seems that he had bought an acct off that web site again, and this time it had been a hacked acct. He had already sold the characters that where in the acct...oh so very bad for bro.

The last and final slap in the face came shortly after when he, for some reason I will never understand, allowed an -10 player to put an alt in the alliance holding corp and gave the alt directors rights, and, less then a day later, his alliance of over 200 players was gone, dissolved.

So, I guess the lesson here is simple, don't buy any eve related items except for plex and gtc's for real world money. One way or another it will be taken from you, whether it be by CCP or other party's, chances are you will loose said items and you will have no way to recover the items or your money.

I did a quick tally on what I know he lost or spent and came up with a staggering total that exceeds 8000 US dollars, or well over 100 billion isk.

If you have a similar story you would like to share....please feel free to add it here.

Know your game, know your limit and play within it, after all, it is just a game.

TL;DR, brother buys 26 bil, and transfers faction lewts over to other brother, who skims off the top.

Translation: I have a second account and used the first to buy all sorts of super cheap illegal isk and quickly bought as much high value items with it as I could. Once it was discovered and the isk taken I gave all the illicit goods I attained to my second account to resell at the now much higher prices available since plex were introduced and the overal price of faction shot up. Now I have lots of isk and my first account is in the positive again so I feel so well chuffed at my sneakiness over ccp that I just had to poast on the forums to brag.

Well done sir..Confused

You can't do any actions that require a fee when your wallet is in the negative.

Well in this case, regardless of the motivation, crime did indeed pay. Well at least it did for the isk sellers and the op. ugh

This is the biggest $ story I have heard in EVE, but way back when I played EQ, and EQ was just about the only MMO in town, I knew several people that had spent thousands of dollars - at that time maxed out chars with good gear were going for as much as $8000.

One guy spent over $6,000 in one day buying up 3 accounts, and two days later all of them were perma-banned :P

Actually, truth be told, I still have my original compaq presario sr 1300 nx computer, the same one I had 3 years ago, I have upgraded my video card and dumped in the maximum amount of ram I could, and I can run 3 clients at the same time if I set up the grafix right....

I did buy a new desk lamp though :)

To answer your query without revealing too much info, my brother does not hold a residence in the country where I live, and when he is between contracts he usually ends up back here for a month or 12 and needs a place to stay either short term, or slightly longer until he finds a place. If his next contract is less than 3 months away he stays with me...the rich smart and good looking brother, if he has nothing lined up he will grab an apartment to hold him over. he does however always have access to the internet and eve.

At times I just have to shake my head at his lack of good judgment.

When he left for his last contract in march of this year, I had this feeling that I should change all the passwords to my 5 eve accts to make sure he would be unable to use them for his hair brained shinanigan, only to find that in less than 4 days from his departure he had actually hacked my e-mail accts and reset the passwords to 4/5 of my eve accts. I petitioned this immediately and have not seen him log in to the characters I know he owns since then. I hope he got perma banned.

I also looked up his corp and saw that it is no longer in his new alliance, and that his new alliance is closed, probably due to the fact he didn't pay the alliance bill.

All in all I think that my estimate of his eve item purchases was probably only about 2/3rds of what he probably spent, but I will never know. He would have been way better off saving the money.

To sum up until the point I stopped reading:

Your brother couldn't afford to live anywhere but he had this top of the line pc, and then since he is living off you and doesn't need to support himself, he buys thousands of real dollars worth of isk. Brilliant.
