Contact Harvest is a good book, the rest are ok but ghosts of onix is crap.

I've only read Fall of Reach, The Flood and First Strike so far...
and they're all really good.. especially Fall of Reach and First Strike.

The first 4 are good scifi books (1 and 3 are great).

Still not read Cole Protocol, but First Strike has to be my favourite of them all, with Contact Harvest a close second.

I generally liked them but felt cole protocol was the weakest of all of them.

Fall of Reach - back story to how MC and the spartans came to be.
The Flood - Essentially the novel version of Halo 1
First Strike - story between Halo 1 and 2 (explains how Johnson survived the first Halo)
Ghosts of Onyx - Doesnt deal with MC at all (and the main char feels like Helio from BSG), want to say its during Halo 2 in another area of the games universe.
Contact Harvest - The back story to how Humans came into contact with the covies and so forth.
Cole Protocol - Essentially how Capt. Keyies got back into the navy.

It's been awhile since I read ghosts of onyx, but I swore near the end it was all about the ark of some sort.

Though I think the feudal japan covenant elites were kind of funny. All I could picture were japanese stone buildings.

Its not the arc but something refered to as a shield world which turned out to be some sort of slipstream style dyson sphere that the forerunners never used.

Do they follow on or have any particular order or can you just pick up anywhere in the series?

If you want a sence of time read them in the following order: (this isnt an offical order but one im making an educated guess on, based on the events that happen in each story. If you want in order of release see my first list.)

First Strike
Ghosts of Onyx

As for your question Fall of Reach, The Flood and First Strike essentially require each other as the events happen one right after the other, case in point certain things happen in The Flood that didnt happen in the game but are refrenced in First Strike. The rest can be read in any order but as I said above I would have to say my second list is the cronological order currently.
