I've finally gotten enough ISK to buy a harbinger and am finishing up my training for battlecruisers. I'm excited about getting my first battlecruiser. Very Happy

Only problem is, the harbinger's weapon bonuses apply towards lasers (I originally thought it was towards energy turrets). I don't have lasers trained yet, and it's going to take me several days to get there.

Would the harbinger still be a decent ship with only medium energy turrets fitted? Or should I continue waiting (Sad) until I get medium pulse lasers trained up? My ISK is burning a hole in my pocket for this ship.

The prophecy certainly works great with mediums, but that's because it can put all it's power into a tight fitting solid tank instead while having semi decent dps to bleed your enemies.

I would say the Harbinger isn't good for mediums though, I dont know why people would want to put medium lasers on the Harbinger, it's tank is rubbish and it has LOADS of room for fitting, best to squeeze every drop of dps out as possible out in my opinion.#

Wait for Focused and Heavy pulses I say.

Medium Energy Turrets = Medium sized LASERs

If the bonus on the harbinger reads anything different, it's a bug in the description. Just fit it with heavy beams and fire away.

They're called newbs, meaning they never had another character with a lengthy forum history to start with.

Abrazzer, I guess I'm a little confused then. I can do medium energy turrets, but the medium pulse lasers and medium beam lasers are all different skills. The Prophecy specifies energy turrets, whereas the Harbinger specifies lasers for their respective ship bonuses.

I've read on some different wikis that the Prophecy is just a poor man's Harbinger. Is there any truth to that? Or are the ships nearly on level with each other?

(And yes, I'm very new to the game)

The medium beam and pulse turrets are small energy turrets as indicated by their skill requirements. The naming of them is a little confusing. Focused medium beam/pulse and heave beam/pulse turrets are medium energy turrets and those get the bonus from both the harbinger and prophecy.

Harbinger really outdoes the prophecy in almost every way. Only difference is in the market price.

You will also train up your drone skills to be able to use at least 5 T1 drones in the Battlecruisers. You will need them. In fact T2 scout drones are needed in almost every ship bigger than a frigate.

Ok, for clarification. Pulse Lasers and Beam Lasers are both Energy Weapons and so the Harbingers Bonuses for Cap Use and Damage applies.

The Bonus also applies only to Cruiser sized Laser. A Medium Beam Laser is in fact a Frigate sized weapon, while a Dual-Medium Beam Laser is a Cruiser sized weapon and also a Heavy Beam Laser.

Use the Harbinger if you want to use Cruiser sized Energy Turrets, the Ship is an excellent Laser Platform.

Contract me your ship and I'll get it set up properly. Then we can head into Hyseria real quick so I can give you a quick tutorial on lasers and energy turrets.

yeah, amarr lasers are named in a confusing fashion.

OP: train cruiser guns before you fly the harby. it's pretty pointless otherwise, unless you're running lvl 1s or something

Do I get a penalty for that or something? I started with a Caldari character, but have fallen in love with the Amarrian ship designs and weapons.

How can you tell what weapon is Cruiser sized or frigate sized? It doesn't say anywhere that I can see in the weapon descriptions.

Anyone have a specific weapon recommendation for what I should outfit in the turret slots?

There is no penality, you can train for every ship and bit of equipment. Regardless of which Race you started with.

There will be a small S, M or L on the weapon icon. That tells you what the size is. Ignore the measurements, they'll just confuse you (such as medium artillery being "bigger" than large railguns).

Check power grid use. Anything under 30 is frig sized. Also the crystals guns use. If they use "S" variant = small = frigate gun.

The skill requirements. If a gun needs Small Energy Weapons at level 1, it's a frigate sized gun. Medium Energy Weapons, it's a cruiser/BC sized. Large Energy Weapon, and it's battleship sized. Extra Large Energy Weapon, and it's Dreadnought sized.

Note that ships only give bonuses to weapons of their size; Frigate guns on a harbinger receive no bonuses.

Honestly, you may seriously want to think about holding off buying this ship until you are sure you know how to use it.

They are grouped in the market: Small, Medium and Large. They are also grouped that same way in the Item Database.

No, most people fly ships outside their character's race.

Like me, Caldari, but i fly Amarr and Gallente.

If you look closer I believe you will see that medium pulse and medium beam are specialization skills that you have to train in order to fit T2.

Then just show info on the turret you want to buy and go to req. tab, if it req. small energy turret skill its a small turret if it req. medium energy turret skill then it's medium turret, that simple.

Also on the market it's sorted out by size too. (under ship equipment -> turrets & bays -> laser turrets -> beam/puls laser -> small/medium/large)

-Cheers, hope it helped

To be fair to OP the amarr guns are named a bit funny.

The "Medium" guns are frigate guns unless they're "Focused". Hmmm?

Basically you want Focused Medium Pulse Laser / Heavy Pulse Laser or Focused Medium Beam Laser / Heavy Beam Laser or some variant thereof.

If you look at the bonuses of the Harbinger it's a high DPS gun boat. It exists to shoot things really hard.

So, if you can't fit it like that, I'd say no, it's not worth it.

Small energy turrets:
Gatling pulse
Dual light pulse
Medium pulse

Medium energy turrets:
Focused medium pulse
Heavy pulse

So yeah confusing naming scheme but there it is.
