I've just come back to EvE from a long hiatus.
Been thinking about assault frigs lately. I used to fly the Ishkur just because I could field some decent drones with that, but I still remember assault frigates feeling like they lacked something. As if they didn't really fit a gang role.
Have they been tweaked anything in the last year or two?

Edited by: TraininVain on 20/05/2009 10:56:30 They got a speed buff.
Also webs got nerfed and scrams now toggle off MWDs.
Cruiser guns got a bit of a tracking nerf.
This means that an AF can orbit a cruiser point blank able to controlling range while a gun cruiser either misses does damage behind it's ability to tank it.
OFC you're boned if the cruiser can neut you, has enough anti frig weapons to beat your tank and/or can control range.
As for a role, something along the lines of a heavy tackler is kinda useful. Like a chewier intie.
They're also relatively durable and ganky for a frig sized ship. Whether that's a "role" per se I dunno since you could just bring a well fitted cruiser. Depends how much of a + being a frig is. |

With a small nos, you can even handle some neuting in an Ishkur (it just depends on what's neuting you and how much). I very rarely fly without a MWD, but I think Ishkur with scram/web/AB can do very well. You're certainly vulnerable without a MWD, but if you can get inside scram/web range, you're in great shape. As far as AF's in general go, they really aren't that bad these days. Some of them are capable of pretty sizable DPS (for a frigate) and still retain the frigate-quality tracking. Others are capable of fitting a very strong tank and make great secondary tacklers (once a Vengeance lands a scram/web on you, it's probably not letting go any time soon ). Some are still trash (Hi Mr. Hawk), but hey, that's true of any ship class. |

Interesting. They seem like an alternative to fast and fragile tacklers, for a different play style. |

A pirate in a Wolf started chasing my Vagabond a few days ago. I didn't engage him because I was sure he had backup on the other side of the gate.
But it's just possible that if he was fitted with a scram, nos and either an armor or speed tank, he could've cut off my MWD and stayed under my guns. All, he'd have to worry about after that would be eating my drones.
In other news, I can now use a Jaguar to clear L3 missions. It's a very tough little ship. |

By nerfing everything else CCP nade AFs so they no longer suck.
But they arent actually good. |

afterburner AFs are, in my opinion, overrated - particularly in 0.0 |

AB's are awesome if something will let you catch it, granted it has to let you catch it.... |

that being the problem. what sort of muppet baby inty pilot gets within scram/web range of an assault frig when even with a mwd on you're looking at 3k, and only 1k with an AB. (~4.3k vs ~1.5k overheated) other than that they can get under a battleship's guns and get ****ed up by drones, run out of ammo, neuted to death, or get killed by a comedy wrecking shot. AFs are very nearly awesome, and they can dosome very specific jobs well, but they're still overrated. |
