As I understand it, for a ship ransom price to be viable it needs to be lower than the cost of replacing the ship, buying new insurance, and replacing it's modules minus the insurance payout, and it needs to be higher than the value of the loot the pirate would get from blowing up the ship. If it's over the price of replacing the ship, the victim won't pay and if it's under the value of the loot, the pirate wouldn't offer it. Right?

For example, if I'm flying around in a cyclone, the cost of replacing it after insurance is about $25m and the loot would be worth about $10m. So the range where a deal could potentially be struck would be $10m to $25m. Probably at the lower end if the victim has no reason to trust that the pirate will honor it and probably at the higher end if they do. Anything outside of that range would be a losing proposition for one party or the other and would be rejected.

But in actuality it seems like people consistently ask for a ransom somewhere between 2 and 10 times the cost of replacing the ship... Which is why nobody ever pays ransoms... Am I missing something? Is ransom just being used as a means to sucker nubs with bad math skills? Or do pirates figure every ship is loaded up with t2 rigs or something?

Pod ransom is a different animal because you have no idea what implants the person has or how much of a pita it will be for them to be sent back to wherever their clone is. So that ends up just being some kind of guessing game based on how old the player is and whatnot, but I imagine that most times the pod is worth less to the player than the ship. People with expensive implants typically don't wear them in situations where they might get blown up.

Why ransom at all?
OR is ransom implied when you are asking for money while killing a target? Even if the word ransom is not used in any shape and or form .

I once had an Omen pinned down, worth less than 5 mil to buy new off the market. Since I was relatively new at the time, I had no real idea of the value, so I'd do quick market searches when the time came. So I bust open the market window, and for whatever reason, accidently typed in "Curse" in the search bar instead of "Omen." ugh

Then I ask him for a 30 million ISK ransom, and he says, "Whoa, whoa, that's pretty high, I can only go as high as 7 million ISK."

Sometimes asking a ludicrously high price can pay off! Wink

Every ransom conversation I've had so far has gone something like this:

Pirate> Give me $100m and we won't pod you
Me> Um, my implants are only worth $3m.. Maybe I'd pay something for keeping my ship
Pirate> Ok, $150m and we let your cyclone go
Me> How about $15m?
*I get podded*
*pirate flies away with $10m in loot wondering why he didn't take the $15m*

because you can associate a monetary value to a nice explosion combined with a real killmail.

although these days fake killmails seems to do the job better... :/

Unreasonable ransoms can be amusing though, hell most of the time I offer ransoms they are in the 500-800mil region. For some poor chap's pod or vexor.

If I was only firing at people for the money this game would have become boring a long time ago eh? Smile

A killmail is worth alot to me, if the payout doesn't outwiegh me getting a kill, I don't care too much about that ransom payout. Who knows, who says you -don't- have crystals in the pod or a Gist-A type on that raven? If you do, I get 350 to not get a raven mail, if you don't, I get a battleship killmail. Win-win

disclaimer: alot of my ransoms are pretty reasonable and I make a nice small income off it along with my gangmates

pay attention to the damage a pod takes and youll know if the ransom you just dishonored was full of slaves or not. and this may seem unrealistic but if i have time my cov ops alt is usually in system with me and i like to scan people to give a good ransom. no way im going to dishonor a 50 mil ransom on a raven if i find out hes got faction loot. ill dishonor a couple hundred mil then.

I don't dishonor ransoms.... No point, I like repeat business. As for ransoming the ship... I'll try for 5 mil for a frig that fought well. Chances are he's got a good fit and replacing those would be more expensive than the 5 mil ransom. I usually go for 10-15 mil on a pod. I know the guy might have implants, but I don't know that for sure. But likewise, I don't want to make parting with his isk to be such a pain that the next time I catch him he'll flat out refuse to pay. I don't really need the "Dude, last time you ****d the **** out of me, no way I'm paying this time" and then I don't get the money I'm after. I haven't ransomed too many cruisers, but my average is about 10-15 mil for those too. But then, this is only me flying solo. I don't need more than that per ransom Smile

I always base ransom at about 50% of uninsured value (this includes modules, rigs etc), I'm not interested in petty cash so if the target DID insure his ship then he's better off getting blown up, if he didn't he's better off paying.

You are not missing anything. Most pirates are complete idiots. Monkeys with guns. But to be fair they don't really loose anything by making outrageous ransoms.

Sometimes they do. Players do strange things ingame.

As a general rule of thumb, NEVER PAY RANSOMS EVER. There are far too many pirates out there dishonoring ransoms that it's just not rational to take that chance.

5 reasons:
Rigs
Time it gets to get a new ship, some people love isk/hour
no km shame for them
Saves the pod too
You don't always have the luxury of a ship/cargo scanner
So many in gang anything less than what you ask for isn't worth it

When I get a descent ransom, I will pay. You ask for too much, I will tell you you did. You won't negotiate the prices, I'll let you waste the ammo and pick up my lowsy T1 items adn take the sec hit. No problems.

The thing that did irk me was when they asked for a ranson and 5 secs later popped me while I was trying to get them the money.

Last time I killed something was a Tempest Fleet Issue and it went something like this:

Me: You like that ship? You have 10 seconds to give me 100 million.
Him: Wait
Me: You have 7 seconds
Him:.....
Me: Bye Bye

At least I remembered to ask for it this time. Usually I don't even bother.
